“we borrow from nature the space upon which we build” – Tadeo Ando
About
Strength and Lightness. Simplicity and Repose. Context, Color, Texture; and the careful, intentional, sculpting of space are the guiding principles in all of my artistic endeavors.
As an architect, I aim to create warm and simple spaces that function and flow easily, with a calming, visually interesting, playful point of view. Consideration of context is also central to my design process; I maintain a commitment to organic design principles, where buildings and structures are intrinsically linked to their surroundings and respond accordingly. Having spent more than 20 years designing, renovating and repurposing residential buildings in the Boston-area within revitalized urban nodes and neighborhoods, my current work and artistic energy has shifted to exploration through paintings, sculpture and large-scale installations.
As an artist, I follow the same core aesthetic as well as a design approach and palette, curated over time, to create artworks that explore similar questions about human-built forms and their intimate connection to moments in time, place, and history. Working with my own hands at a smaller scale, allows me a sense of immediacy and a tangible quality as I explore the broader themes of meaningful connection to place, awe of the natural environment, a sense of hope and belonging to cultural identity and history, and continuity of family and community.
